Love Your Enemies

Matthew 5:43-48 (NIV)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

As difficult t it is to love our enemies, it is imperative, we must do so. Why is it imperative? Because Jesus tell us too! (v.44)

Lest I be a hypocrite, I must confess this is very hard for me to do. However, Jesus promised us that if we pray and ask for anything in His name, He will do it!

14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. John 14:14

So, I pray for myself first, that I might receive His power, to help me love my enemies and those who persecute me. I also pray that all Christians will receive the same power, so they too will be able to love their enemies.  I also pray, for perfection in this, as my Heavenly Father is perfect (v. 48)!  It is a daunting task, but one that God will honor if we sincerely desire it. He is Faithful!

Praying for His perfection and power to love my enemies,

Rev. David Larsen
