Honoring Your Mother

Jesus Remembers (Honors) His Mother

When Jesus saw his mother,

And the disciple whom he loved standing near,

He said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”

And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.  Gospel of John 19:26-27

As we honor our mothers this month, it is interesting to note that Jesus honored his mother also. In the story of Jesus as a boy at the temple, the narrative ends with the acknowledgement that Jesus obeyed his mother (Luke. 2: 41-51).  When His mother asked him to do something about the lack of wine at the wedding festival at Canaan, Jesus obeyed her, by providing more wine when He turned the water to wine (John 2: 1-12).

Obedience to His mother was Jesus honoring his mother.

Even in the throes and agony of death on the cross, Jesus honors his mother.  When he sees her standing near John the disciple, He tells his mother that John will be her son. And then Jesus tells John that from then on she would be his mother. The implication of this passage is that John would provide for and look after Jesus mother. Jesus thus honored his mother by making sure she would be taken care of.

We see from the honor Jesus bestowed upon his mother, Jesus regards and esteems mothers very highly!

On this Mother’s Day, and every chance you have, remember to honor your mother.

Esteem her highly, because mothers are highly esteemed by God!
