Picture of Your Heart

Published February 5, 2013

John Wesley’s quote, “Let your words be the genuine picture of your heart”, both intimidates me and inspires me. Our words do portray a genuine picture of our hearts. As a Christian and secondly as a Minister, I am expected to use and speak words that are Christ like. I know as a Christian, I am expected by Christ to use words that exhibit love, patience, compassion, mercy, and kindness. This is where I am intimidated, I know how difficult this can be for me. And often I fall way short of the mark. Unfortunately, there are times when the words I use portray a genuine picture of my heart that should not be exposed for public viewing. It reveals the ugliness of anger, impatience, ridicule, mockery, spite and false accusation. Any evidence of Christ’s love is hidden within the dark shadows of my picture of the heart. These dark shadows are created by my ill-chosen words.

However, I am inspired by the beautiful picture my heart could be. I am inspired to create a picture of my heart that mirrors the perfect, genuine heart of Christ.

I am inspired to learn and use more of God’s word for it is perfect, pure, full of love, and kindness.

2 Samuel 22:31

New Century Version (NCV)

31 “The ways of God are without fault;
the Lord’s words are pure.
He is a shield to those who trust him.

Psalm 12:6

New Century Version (NCV)

The Lord’s words are pure,
like silver purified by fire,
like silver purified seven times over.

Proverbs 30:5

New King James Version (NKJV)

Every word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him

I am inspired to use kind words more often for they are good for the soul and body.

Proverbs 16:24

New Living Translation (NLT)

24 Kind words are like honey—
sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

I praise and thank God for the guidance, conviction and power of the Holy Spirit to make me choose my words more carefully. If I am obedient to Him and His word then my words will create a genuine Christ like picture.

May your words create a genuine heart in Christ!
