Words of Encouragement from the Word

Published December 15, 2012

It is my prayer that all who read this blog on encouragement has received encouragement beyond measure. I freely admit my need for encouragement and its importance in my live. I am positive it is the same for all.

As promised here are some words of encouragement from God which have become very personal for me.

Genesis 1:27 New International Version (NIV)

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

Jeremiah 1:5 New International Version (NIV)

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,
before you were born I set you apart;

Psalm 139: 1-17 New International Version (NIV)

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

These three scriptures are of great value to me in times of insecurity and when my self-esteem is under attack. Of the three, the most uplifting for me, is Psalm 139: 13.

I fondly remember the beautiful crocheting that my grand mother’s hands performed. The beautiful materials she used and the click, click, clicking of the crochet needles as she hooked, spun, and weaved her wonderful design into the creation of the most wonderful doilies and ladies handkerchiefs.  All were unbelievably intricate and unique in their design. But her greatest masterpieces were her table clothes. The time, scope, and, work of these were unimaginable. However, to grandma they were a work of love. How proud she was to display them on her enormous dining room table. Some she would use to drape over her bed as a top covering. And some she gave as gifts of love. Howl lucky and fortunate those individuals were!  These memories of my grandmother are such a wonderful example of God’s intricate knitting and creation of us!

Take these scripture to heart. Make them prayers of thanksgiving (Ps. 139: 14). They are wonderful reminders of our importance to God. Be encouraged by them!

Next, more encouraging words from God found in the story and history of Christ’s birth.

Psalm 10:17 New International Version (NIV)

17 You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;
you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
